Semi-cloisonné enamel, also known as Epola, is a modern alternative to traditional cloisonné enamel that mimics its high-quality, glossy finish but uses synthetic glass powders for greater color flexibility, including PMS color matching. In this technique, a brass or copper metal plate is die-struck to create a custom design with recessed areas. These areas are hand-filled with colored synthetic glass powder, which is then baked at high temperatures to harden the enamel, creating a smooth, level surface between the enamel and the metal outlines. The process allows for intricate details and a glassy finish, similar to traditional cloisonné, but is more cost-effective and versatile due to the use of synthetic materials.
